The Bitterness of Diabetes

April 24th, 2009 by admin

I was born with a sweet tooth and I love eating sweets. But it was not the main reason why I had a diabetes. My pancreas does not produce the needed amount of insulin for my body. I was included in the medical list of people who have a weak pancreas. My love for sweets even triggered the diabetes more. I tried eating sugar free foods but the satisfaction I get from those foods is different from the food made from real sugar. My indulgence makes the disease harder to combat.

Diabetes is a life-long disease marked by high levels of sugar in the blood. People with diabetes have high blood sugar. This is because their pancreas does not make enough insulin or their muscle, fat, and liver cells do not respond to insulin normally, or both. There are three type of diabetes, the type 1 wherein the body makes little or no insulin at all, it usually starts at childhood. The second type is the type 2 which often occur in adults wherein the pancreas does not make enough insulin to keep blood glucose levels normal, often because the body does not respond well to the insulin. The third type is the Gestational diabetes that develops during pregnancies. A sedentary lifestyle contributes to having a diabetes as well as obesity.

A distant relative of mine just recently had a leg amputation after his toe had been pinched by a nail cutter. When you have diabetes, wounds are difficult to heal due to the sugar content in the blood. A diabetic needs to inject insulin for the rest of his life to maintain the sugar balance in his body. Sugar is prohibited, that is the bitter side of having a diabetes.

Control Over Anorexia Nervosa

April 5th, 2009 by admin

When I was in high school and even when I reached college, my all time favorite singer was Karen Carpenter. And on the day of my wedding, her song was being play while I walk down the isle. She has a distinct voice that captivated me but she also had a distinct illness that caused her life. She suffered from Anorexia Nervosa.

People with anorexia are obsessed with being thin. They lose a lot of weight and are terrified of gaining weight. They believe they are fat even though they are very thin. People with anorexia starve themselves, avoid high-calorie foods and exercise constantly. People have different reasons why they get anorexic. People with anorexia may believe they would be happier and more successful if they were thin. They want everything in their lives to be perfect. Their idea of perfection and control starts with them looking perfect. People with severe anorexia may be at risk of death from starvation.

Treatment of anorexia is difficult, because people with anorexia believe there is nothing wrong with them. For a successful treatment, patients must want to change and must have the full support of family and friends. Professional counseling is also important. People with anorexia feel safe, secure and comfortable with their illness. Their biggest fear is gaining weight, and gaining weight is seen as loss of control.
